Újpest started hockey in 1930, but after one season it was dropped until 1955 when the sport was started up again by the Újpest Torna Egylet. Starting in the late 1950s for the next 30 years the club pulled in 13 Hungarian titles and 9 Hungarian Cups. Between the 1981-82 season and the 1987-88 season Újpest won six titles in a row, which no team has accomplished since then. In 2010 the team went through four seasons of financial difficulties where the team finished at the bottom of the standings. In the past three seasons the club has been nicely building the team back up as they have improved every season compared to the previous one. Some of the bigger name players in club history have been János Ancsin, Csaba Kovács Sr. and Attila Bálint. However for Slovak hockey fans names such as Ladislav Sikorcin, Peter Huba and Juraj Kadlubiak who all played in the Extraliga. Former Slovak national team players Michal Jurasko, Jozef Voskar and Jan Zlocha all spent time with Újpest.
The club plays in the Újpest Ice Hall which holds 1,500 spectators and was built in 2003.
