2018.11.07. 18:30 |
Hungary opened up the November international break with a game against Kazakhstan. The game did not go as planned however the players showed signs of the new systems and tactics.

Hungary-Kazakhstan 1-3

Head coach Jarmo Tolvanen gave Bence Bálizs the start in net with Zoltán Hetényi serving as the backup goalie. Not playing today was Tamás Láday, Arnold Varga, Krisztián Szabó and Miklós Rajna. The team captain for the game was János Vas with István Bartalis, Bence Stipsicz and Tamás Pozsgai serving as the backup goalies.

In the opening minutes of the game Hungary kept the puck in the offensive end of the ice, making it difficult for Kazakhstan to create anything. Hungary managed to kill a penalty at the midway point of the period to keep the game scoreless. It was clear early on in the game that the players were trying to play within the new system that the coaching staff is trying to implement. In the second half of the period Kazakhstan was forcing their own game on Hungary and pinned the home team into their own end of the ice. Late in the period Hungary had the first real scoring chance in the game when Kevin Wehrs teed up a shot from just in the blueline, but Boyarkin made the save. István Sofron picked up a hand injury and did not return to the game.

In the first minute of the second period just as Hungary killed a penalty Kazakhstan broke the scoreless tie as Savitskiy put a rebound in. On the ensuing Hungary possession Bence Szirányi and Bálint Magosi had chances as well. Kazakhstan made it 2-0 when they came down on a 2 on 1 rush and beat Bálizs for the goal. After a quick third Kazakh goal Jarmo Tolvanen called timeout to settle his troops. János Hári had a scoring chance and Bartalis, Hári, Kóger trio combined for a tic-tac toe play however the puck did not cross the goal line. Hungary had their first power play of the game but did not score, late Bálizs stuffed a breakaway chance for Kazakhstan. Late in the period Bartalis tried to stuff the puck from up close but the period ended with a 3-0 Kazakhstan lead.

In the third period Dániel Kiss had a long shot where the rebound created chances. Later in the period Kazakhstan pinned Hungary in their own end for a few minutes.  The Hungarian penalty kill was working in the closing period as Kazakhstan did not score on the man advantage. With just under ten minutes left in the game Gergő Nagy had a centering pass that was deflected right to Bence Szirányi who sent a one timmer into the back of the net to pull Hungary back within two goals. Later in the period Vilmos Galló had a shot from high in the slot that was pushed up onto the net by the Kazakh goalie. The closing minutes brought back and forth hockey but neither team managed to create any solid chances. With just under two minutes left in the game Hungary pulled their goalie for the extra attacker, Kazakhstan followed this up by calling timeout. In the end Kazakhstan took the game 3-1.

Jarmo Tolvanen, head coach, Hungary: Of course, I’m disappointed. We have some things that are still a process, but we’re not even close to what I would like to see. We didn’t skate enough, we didn’t move the puck enough, and I think that was more of a reason for our not so good first two periods. We know learning a new sysytem is hard and takes time, but I wouldn’t say that our struggles had anything to do with that. We just have to clean up some things and do the basics better.

János Hári, forward, Hungary: We tried a new tactic, but we couldn’t manage to do it today. We tried to shoot the puck into their period, but it didn’t work as we planned. They sat back and countered all the time. We had lot of giveaways and our passes weren’t accurate. We need to improve that for the next game and maybe we will be better in the next game.

Vilmos Galló, forward, Hungary: This is just the beginning of the season for the national team. Everybody is playing in a different system with their clubs, so we need time to get together, but we need to play better and stronger. In the last period we scored a goal and had many opportunities, so we need to build from that momentum for the next game.

Krisztián Nagy, forward, Hungary:Today I think we could feel that we play in different leagues and in different teams,we needed to quickly adjust to the new tactics which did not really work today. I think that it was positive that we were able to block so many shots, unfortunately István Sofron got injured today. It is great that so many of us are playing in higher level leagues. If we can switch this to the national team I think we will be fine.

Kirill Panyukov, forward, Kazakhstan:It was a good game, Hungary were very fast in the first period. We were stronger mentally in the beginning of the second period and we scored three goals in four minutes. It was a hard but good game. Now we have some rest, eat some food and prepare for the next game.
